Outside my office window…

A young couple are standing on the rocks by the ocean, praying.  They are holding hands with their eyes closed and heads bowed; the man is speaking.  They pray for several minutes, and then they smile and hug and kiss and continue their walk on the beach.  It looks very sweet.  I’d forgotten until just now that I used to dream about having something like that.

    Hi Lily.

I’ve been reading your blog for a while now. It has been therapeutic. This past year I finally wondered my way out of the evangelical Christianity I was raised with and, while the freedom and intellectual honesty I’ve gained has been wonderful, I still do worry that I’ve lost something. I don’t believe in God. I don’t believe anyone was there listening to that couple praying, but I do think that, for some reason, there is something centering, life-giving, spiritually-binding about prayer. For some reason, I think it helps couples connect on an even deeper level when they see themselves and their relationship as bound and held by something bigger. Why do you think that is?

I think there is something especially beautiful about a couple who both love something else more than they love each other. When two people are jointly dedicated to a belief or cause, so that their love isn’t just about them, it makes romantic love more heroic. I don’t think you have to be a theist to have that.
